Students who are required to have coverage are automatically enrolled in their plan and notified about the coverage at the beginning of each semester of enrollment at IU. This includes all international students and graduate-level professional science students who are in specific programs. International Scholars will be contacted with information on how to enroll when they arrive on campus. Appointed Postdoctoral Fellows and graduate students with a Student Academic Appointment or Fellowship Award may also be eligible for IU-sponsored health coverage. Students not eligible for other IU insurance plans can opt into a voluntary plan.

International Plan

This plan is mandatory for all international students, visiting scholars and Intensive English Program (IEP & PIE) students. This plan is also available to eligible OPT students.

Professional Plan

Domestic graduate students in the following health science programs are automatically enrolled in this plan:

Student Academic Appointees, Appointed Postdoctoral Fellows & Fellowship Recipients

Student Academic Appointees (SAA), Appointed Postdoctoral Fellows and Fellowship Recipients who meet the minimum eligibility requirements are automatically enrolled in this plan each semester. The university pays the full cost for the student’s premium.

Voluntary Plan

For students not eligible for any other IU health insurance plan the university offers a voluntary plan. This plan is managed by University Health Plans (UHP) and Anthem.
